From EverQuest Legends Wiki
(Redirected from Quest)

Quests are activities that guide players toward new characters, storylines, triggered events, or rewards such as platinum or loot. In classic EverQuest, the quest system is intentionally simple: players interact with NPCs using "/say" dialogue, and the server parses their text for specific keywords. These keywords are often hinted at in NPC dialogue through square‑bracket prompts, though some quests require players to discover the correct terms from other NPCs, from different stages of a quest line, or from related quests. In rare cases, no keyword prompts are provided at all, leaving players to rely on context, experimentation, or community documentation.

Some quests or quest stages require an item 'turn‑in'. This involves left‑clicking an NPC while holding an item or money to open the Give Window. A specific combination of items and/or coin may be required to complete the quest, but the interface provides no indication of what is needed and does not prevent players from handing over incorrect or unnecessary items. As a result, players must take care to verify the exact requirements of each quest before proceeding.

Certain turn‑ins must be completed in a single Give Window action, while others can be fulfilled across multiple submissions, sometimes involving contributions from more than one player. Quests that allow this type of shared, incremental completion are known as "multiquestable." For additional details, see Multiquest.

With few exceptions involving scripted events, quests in Classic EverQuest do not have time limits. The game client provides no quest‑tracking interface, and the server does not maintain explicit quest‑progress states. Instead, longer quests rely on indirect mechanisms such as carried items (e.g., notes or letters), dialogue keywords as described above, or, in the case of certain epic quests, faction adjustments that reflect a player’s advancement through the quest.

These mechanics can sometimes be used to bypass portions of lengthy quests. Examples include raising True Spirit faction to skip segments of the Shaman Epic Quest, or using the knives obtained during the Rogue Epic Quest to avoid several intermediate sub-quests.

Compared to modern MMORPGs, the overall quality, variety, and reward‑to‑effort ratio of quests in Classic EverQuest is relatively limited. Despite the game’s title, players generally advance their characters far more efficiently by gaining experience through sustained combat in static dungeon camps or outdoor zones than by completing quests.

On Live and Time‑Locked Progression (TLP) servers, the introduction of Epic Quests during Kunark marked a significant expansion in quest complexity, featuring raid encounters, extended storylines, and lengthy rare‑spawn requirements. The Velious expansion further broadened quest content with numerous class‑specific armor quests that offered substantial rewards and helped foster an active raiding environment. Over time, EverQuest continued to refine both its quest design and its quest‑related interface in response to evolving genre standards and competition from other MMORPGs.

EverQuest Legends adopts a streamlined approach to quests and progression by making all game content more accessible. Encounters are tuned across multiple difficulty levels, enabling solo players, small groups, and small raids to experience the full breadth of the game at a pace suited to their playstyle. Most zones can be instanced, and all raid targets are instanced, ensuring consistent access to content without competition‑based bottlenecks.
